Mile high baseball and beer
With a very limited amount of time in Denver this past fall, I based my non-work time in the city around a couple of late season baseball games and some craft beer sampling. This is the luxury of second visits to places – there’s no need to rush around seeing the sights to alleviate the fear of missing out on something.
Once my meetings wrapped up on a Friday afternoon, I got to work in making the most of my weekend in Denver. First stop: my all time favourite piece of public art – “I See What You Mean” or as it is more commonly known as, “Big Blue Bear”. My weekend was off to a great start.

Denver, delicious
The last word on my recent trip to Denver will be all about the food. I spent remarkably little money for some truly delicious eats. Here are a few of the highlights…
Euclid Hall – On a recommendation from a colleague, I headed here for dinner the first night and had what was probably the most unique of the dishes I sampled on my trip – a green chile and pork cheek poutine. It was a perfect blend of sweet, hot and salty:
Denver Nuggets Game
The NHL lockout cost me a chance to see my Nordiques (I refuse to call them the Avalanche) play Chicago while I was in Denver, so I took the opportunity to see only my second NBA game, taking in a Nuggets – Jazz game on a Friday night. A small crowd gave me the chance to snag a snazzy club seat at a fraction of the cost, making for an economical and fun way to spend my last night in the city.
Once in the arena, I found my way down to the lower level seats to take in some of the shoot-around (thanks to the usher who turned a blind eye to me sneaking in to seats that weren’t mine):
I love the Big Blue Bear
Living, as it is, in a city with little to no public art, I sometimes get a little giddy at the effusive displays of creativity in public spaces in the places to which I travel. With limited time to fully explore Denver, I still managed to come across a number of really interesting pieces of public art.
First, the striking “The Yearling” by Donald Lipski outside of their public library downtown. Indeed, a horse standing atop of a chair. Love this:
Touring Mile High
A three day conference had me in Denver, Colorado. Unfortunately, the timing didn’t line up for me to combine two of my favourite things – travel and football. To make up for that, I decided to use a bit of the very limited free time I had to do a tour of the Broncos stadium – Sports Authority Field at Mile High. A short light rail ride from downtown and ten minute walk away I came upon the stadium:
Denver, Delayed
I returned home from Denver about a week ago, but haven’t had a chance to write a thing about the trip. I’m participating in NaNoWriMo this month, so am preoccupied with trying to complete a 50,000+ word novel in the next 14 days. I’ll write more about what was an enjoyable trip to take in a conference. I loved the food, was astounded by the selection of beer, and fell in love with what I think is the most engaging piece of public art I have encountered on my travels – the Big Blue Bear (see below) – entitled “I See What You Mean”. More to come later this month on five great days in Denver.
